In early twentieth-century Eastern Europe, a young Jewish woman disguises herself as a man in order to study at a Yeshiva and pursue her passion for learning, a path forbidden to women by the Orthodox tradition. Based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's story, the film is also a musical romance about identity and the desire for self-determination.
