Hilltown

Hilltown is a residential district in the northern part of Dundee, Scotland, situated on the hillside above the city centre. The neighbourhood developed primarily in the 19th and early 20th centuries as Dundee's jute industry expanded, and the area was densely populated with workers' tenement housing. Significant slum clearance and redevelopment in the 20th century replaced much of the original tenement stock with post-war housing schemes, fundamentally altering the character of the district. Hilltown retains a local shopping centre and is known for its views over the city and across the Tay estuary.
