Anderston Centre

Anderston Centre

Anderston Centre, Glasgow, Scotland

The Anderston Centre is a large brutalist urban development in the Anderston district of Glasgow city centre, built in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of a major slum clearance and inner-city regeneration scheme. The complex combines residential tower blocks, a shopping centre, offices, and a hotel in an integrated multi-level structure connected by elevated walkways, following the urban renewal ideology of the period. The development replaced a densely populated 19th-century working-class neighbourhood and represented a dramatic transformation of the area's character. The complex has faced criticism for its design and social outcomes and parts of it have been subject to ongoing redevelopment.
