Glenfinnan

Glenfinnan, Highlands, Scotland

Glenfinnan is a small village at the head of Loch Shiel in the western Scottish Highlands, situated in the Lochaber area. It is most famous historically as the site where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard on 19 August 1745, marking the start of the Jacobite Rising, commemorated by the Glenfinnan Monument erected in 1815. The village is also internationally recognised for the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a 21-arch curved railway viaduct completed in 1901 that carries the West Highland Line and features prominently in the Harry Potter film series as the route of the Hogwarts Express. The surrounding landscape of mountains, loch, and woodland is considered some of the most dramatic in Scotland.
