Kielder Water Hydroelectric Facility

Kielder Water Hydroelectric Facility

Kielder Water Hydroelectric Facility, Northumberland, England

The Kielder Water Hydroelectric Facility generates electricity from water released from Kielder Water reservoir in Northumberland, the largest man-made lake by volume in northern Europe. The power station was built as part of the Kielder Dam project, completed in 1982, with hydroelectric generation incorporated into the dam's water release infrastructure. The facility produces renewable electricity that feeds into the National Grid, making productive use of the reservoir's water management function. Kielder Water was created primarily to secure water supply for the industrial north-east of England.
