Whitehall

Whitehall is a road and the surrounding area in the City of Westminster, central London, connecting Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square and forming the principal ceremonial route of the British state. The street is lined with major government departments and ministerial offices, including the Cabinet Office, the Ministry of Defence, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and gives its name by metonymy to the civil service and central government. Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister, is accessed via a short side street off Whitehall. The Cenotaph, the national war memorial, stands in the middle of the road.
