Devizes is a market town in Wiltshire, England, situated at the northern edge of Salisbury Plain approximately twenty-five miles north of Salisbury. The town has a historic market place with a distinctive market cross and two Norman churches, and its centre retains a considerable number of Georgian and earlier buildings. It is best known for the Caen Hill flight of twenty-nine locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal, which descends the escarpment to the west of the town in a dramatic staircase. The town also has a museum with important collections relating to Wiltshire archaeology, including finds from nearby prehistoric sites.
