Oldham is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, situated on the south-western foothills of the Pennines approximately seven miles north-east of Manchester city centre. It developed as a major centre of the cotton spinning industry during the Industrial Revolution and at its peak in the early 20th century was said to spin more cotton than France and Germany combined. The town has a population of approximately 230,000 and is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham. It is served by the Metrolink tram network linking it to Manchester city centre.
