Merrion Square

Merrion Square

Merrion Square, Dublin, Republic of Ireland

Merrion Square is a large Georgian garden square on the south side of Dublin city centre, widely considered one of the finest examples of Georgian urban design in Europe. The square is lined on three sides by elegant four- and five-storey red-brick townhouses dating from the late 18th century, many of which have colourful painted doorways that are emblematic of Dublin. The central park, once private to residents, was opened to the public in the 20th century and contains a flamboyant public sculpture of Oscar Wilde, who grew up on the square. The National Gallery of Ireland and Leinster House, the seat of the Irish parliament, border the square.
