Blackhall Colliery

Blackhall Colliery

Blackhall Colliery, Peterlee, County Durham, England

Blackhall Colliery is a former mining village located on the County Durham coast, near the town of Peterlee in north-east England. The colliery itself operated from 1909 until its closure in 1981 and was one of the most productive undersea coal mines in Durham, with workings extending beneath the North Sea. The village and surrounding coastline suffered severe pollution from colliery waste tipped directly onto the beaches for decades, but extensive reclamation work carried out from the 1980s onwards has restored much of the coastal landscape. The area is now part of the Durham Heritage Coast.
