Beckton Gas Works

Beckton Gas Works, London, England

Beckton Gas Works was one of the largest gasworks complexes in the world, located in Beckton in the London Borough of Newham in east London. It was established in 1870 by the Gas Light and Coke Company on the north bank of the Thames, and at its peak covered an enormous area of reclaimed marshland. The works were decommissioned following the conversion of the gas supply network to North Sea natural gas in the 1960s and early 1970s. The largely derelict site became famous as a film location, most notably for Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket in 1987, before being cleared for residential and commercial redevelopment.
